I was intending to look at the Euro in this post, but that can keep till later. Something much more interesting has captured my attention: Thames Water.
I wouldn’t usually be too concerned with private companies, their success and failures and the gains and losses of individual business people, are a feature of capitalism that usually just happens in the background; but this one is massive, relates to a monopoly product we can’t live without and is now claiming it may need support (a need to bail out the water perhaps?) from the government: that affects us all.
Thames Water is on the brink of going into administration and it certainly looks as if the shareholders will be wiped out ( though it is not that simple given some of the organisations that hold the shares) Who knows what will happen to the bondholders, knowing this government we poor taxpayers will have to help them buy more yachts….
Anyway, enough whingeing, let’s look at the data:
It is complicated as all the UK water companies, in their current form, were created at the same time. Nevertheless Thames Water was the largest and thus the flagship (oh dear, does not bode well for the rest of the fleet).
The companies were formed (by reorganisation of the various elements) on 1 April 1974
They were incorporated on 1 April 1989
The Water Act was given royal assent on 6 July 1989
The Offer for Sale was dated 22 November 1989
And finally the Flotation (pun intended) happened on 12 December 1989.
Now it won’t take a genius to remember that 1989 was the year of the collapse of the Berlin Wall. What has that got to do with water companies in the UK, you ask? Well obviously nothing, directly.
However astrology does link them, via Saturn and Neptune, which were in conjunction in 1989.
We have already looked briefly at the characteristics of Saturn in Pisces and its coming conjunction with Neptune and inevitably one of the themes in its widest sense, is water challenges. Ah….. We have already seen some of the potential consequences of this mix in the Ukraine dam attack and the loss of the Titan submersible. We should not be surprised to see water company issues as well.
I am casting charts for 1 April 1989 (midnight) and for 22 December 1989 but we will also look at the chart of the Thames Water parent, Kemble Water Holdings Ltd as this will tell us about the company on its own and not all the other UK water companies.
The Neptune Saturn conjunction is prominent as expected. The Moon applying to a trine to Jupiter indicates the proposed issue to the public.
I think the floatation chart is more useful though
Once again we see the Neptune-Saturn conjunction. This time Jupiter is opposed to Mercury as the privatization becomes real. The winners are the government and the management indicated by the Sun rising, the losers are likely to be the people signified by the Moon in opposition to the Sun and making no real good aspects. Still, a lot can happen in 30 plus years and clearly has.
Finally, we look at the Kemble chart. Obviously Saturn and Neptune are not in conjunction (that happens only every 36 years) but we can see that Saturn is approaching an opposition with Neptune- hardly a good sign. We also see Jupiter in Scorpio on the MC , suggesting financial services rather than customer services are likely to be the goals!
But while these charts are interesting and we could spend lots of time looking at the potential in them, we don’t have to because we can instead look at the progressions and transits that describe where we are today.
First let’s look at the original incorporation chart compared to today, I’ve set it for Noon BST. This won’t tell us the specifics of Thames but it will give us an indication of the wider water company environment.
One of the most interesting elements in this chart is the progressed Sun. It may have started looking bright but now it is forming an opposition with the natal Pluto- a perfect representation of the chickens coming home to roost for both government and management. In 1989 Pluto sextile Neptune-Saturn was releasing value, now we must pay the piper (sorry, the puns just write themselves). In 4 months the Moon will conjoin that Sun bringing a cycle to a close.
Of course it is the conjunction of Saturn with Neptune in 2025 at 0 Aries in May 2025 which will really close the wider cycle so there is still plenty to play out before that happens.
Nevertheless we can see elements of the story already. The sudden resignation of Thames’ CEO is shown by the transiting Sun ( leadership)opposing the Incorporation Uranus ( shocks and separations). Transiting Uranus conjunct the progressed Venus and triggered by the square to Mars, indicates the whole issue of solvency being thrown into the media this week, Mercury transiting progressed Mars reinforces this.
We note that Uranus is currently at the degree where it will form its conjunction with Jupiter next April. I feel that wider financial issues will hit all similar companies then
It is worrying for the UK taxpayer too, as we see the natal Moon, the public, is being squared by the transiting Node and by todays’ transiting Moon. That the natal Moon will continue to be transiting by Pluto for the next 2 years is further confirmation that the bigger picture has yet to play out.
But we need to look at Kemble’s chart for the Thames specifics.
The transiting Sun (CEO) is again a key factor as it appears on the Descendant; both an indication of the separation form the company but also as it moves from the 6th to the 7th house and indication of things coming to light. the Sun on the descendant is also indicative of the need for help from partners/government
Note also transiting Pluto opposing the progressed Mars; this is not new and has been the theme of the last few years, with fines for failure to keep within the regulations and the horrendous tales of sewerage in rivers and seas. The fact that the progressed MC at 28 Scorpio, and that progressed Mercury is opposite natal Pluto and squared by transiting Neptune too, is now tapping ( oh, no, I can’t stop these puns) into this opposition has meant that it is even more public than before. Given this combination, I suspect management and shareholders are also at loggerheads and trying to undermine each other.
It looks like we may have some big changes/decisions in the next few weeks as Jupiter reaches the IC and opposes the incorporation Jupiter.
It is also interesting to look at Saturn and Neptune. The progressed Saturn is quincunx natal Saturn, potentially an indication of the infrastructure weaknesses. Neptune is less problematic- - although opposed at the moment by Venus and recently squared by Uranus, the water itself is less of an issue at the moment. However, it is also interesting to note that the Neptune-Saturn conjunction of 2025 will be exactly on the Node of this chart. A reminder how charts lock in their destiny long before it manifests in practice.
Also worth looking at is the 2024 Uranus –Jupiter conjunction at 21-22 Taurus. It conjoins natal Venus in the chart but not much else ( though it is only 2 degrees past the square to natal Neptune) Probably this company will no longer be in existence by then. But it is not easy from this chart alone to see who will own Thames Water in future.
